Many affiliate marketing programs compensate their affiliates in either of three ways: pay-per-click (PPC), pay-per-sale (PPS), or pay-per-lead (PPL). In pay-per-click affiliate marketing, the affiliate is paid whenever he directs traffic to the merchant’s site. PPS and PPL affiliate marketing programs work rather differently. In PPS, the affiliate only gets paid when his referral converts into an actual sale. In typical PPS affiliate programs, the affiliate would usually get 15% to 20% commission for each conversion. PPL affiliate programs work the same way, although affiliates are paid a fixed fee whenever his referral converts into a lead for the company.

Some affiliate marketing programs are two-tier programs, wherein the affiliate is also allowed to recommend other affiliates to the merchant. In such affiliate programs, the affiliate would not only be paid for the traffic or sales that he would direct to the merchant’s site but also for the traffic or sales directed by the affiliates who signed up with the program through his recommendation.

Yet another way of earning more profits with affiliate marketing is through residual affiliate programs. Residual affiliate programs are affiliate programs where the affiliate gets paid a number of times for as long as the merchant keeps the customer the affiliate has referred to his site. One form of residual program gets the affiliate paid a commission every time the referred customer purchases something on the merchant’s site. Another form of residual affiliate program gets the affiliate paid a percentage every month for as long as the company keeps the referred customer.

With a lot of options available and a lot of ways to earn money, affiliate marketing is undoubtedly the most popular and the easiest way to make money by selling other people’s products online. As to how much money one can get from affiliate marketing actually depends on the affiliate. A dedicated and hardworking affiliate would certainly get more from the program compared to those affiliates who would simply sign up and forget about the program later.

Looking to make some extra cash online? As hard as it is to believe it is entirely possible to make money on the internet. While I haven’t gotten rich in the last two years I have been able to carve out a little piece of the internet pie for myself. I got started much like anyone else. I started using Google search to find ways to make money online. I checked many different search phrases and found so many possibilities that I was overwhelmed by what actually worked and what might be a scam. I checked out online surveys, creating affiliate web sites, MLM’s and Google Adsense just to name a few.

In the end I spent a good month researching all these possibilities trying to figure out the best route to make extra cash online. Creating a web site was out of my league as I had never even attempted to build one and online surveys and MLM’s, well they just seemed kind of shady. Then one day I came across an excerpt from an e-book called Google Cash by Chris Carpenter. What caught my eye initially was that I didn’t need to have a web site and I could make money by using Google Adwords, the largest and most popular search engine in the world. It sounded quite simple, place small paid ads on Google and get a commission on anything I sold.

I went ahead and purchased Google Cash and my online money making experience began. There was a learning curve and for the first 3 months I lost money. Not a whole lot because I was careful with my daily budget. And then something amazing happened, after much trial and error on the 4 month I made a profit of almost $400. The next month I made a little more. From that point on I slowly grew my profits, finding tid-bits of information here and there on the internet that helped show me how to make my Adwords campaigns more profitable.

In fact in my quest to make extra cash online I was able to profit a little over $23,000 during the year of 2007 and my return on investment (ROI) for that year was over 100%. I made over 2 dollars for every dollar I invested. That’s a nice bit of extra cash in addition to my full time job.

But at the same time, if you can make some residual income through these methods and add value by endorsing reputable products and services, why not do that? The more you promote affiliate products and services, the more money you make. I call the money that I make from affiliate programs my play money. I use to indulge myself with fine dining, spa visits and other extras that I ordinarily don't do for myself. It's really fun to go the mailbox, find these checks and plan how to spend them!

Through your affiliate program, you are leveraging your sales by getting many others to sell for you. Let's say you had 100 affiliates and each one sold on average, 10 of your products every month. Now that wouldn't happen immediately but it is reasonable to expect those kinds of results and better with your own affiliate program. What would you pay to have a system like this in place that would generate a minimum of $25,000 a month?

The best types of products for affiliate programs are information products like eBooks, CD sets with workbooks that offer training on a particular topic and seminars that are often packaged with books, tapes and/or CDs. The great news is that even if you do not have such a product yet, that is an easy fix. You know something that relates to what you do and that makes you an expert. People will pay dearly for your expertise. All you need is to get some help figuring out how to package it and sell it through your own affiliate program. Start an affiliate program and you can create a stream of income for yourself, whether or not you're physically working.

I hate to break it to you but whether you have your own business or a job, if you have to work in order to make money, you are trading your time for dollars. Having your own affiliate program allows you to make money when you're sleeping, taking a tour of the world, golfing, fishing, enjoying your family and anything else you would rather be doing. Whatever that is, it truly means freedom to be happy and live the life you really want. Once you have your own affiliate program, it will work automatically like a machine that cranks out more and more money for you. When I purchased my first computer over 10 years ago, I knew I wanted to put it to work and make money with it some how. But I knew nothing about computers or the Internet. I knew nothing about network marketing, search engine marketing, or even how to create my own web site. I knew nothing about e-mail marketing e-mail leads or how to set up an e-mail list.

I began searching the Internet for ideas. I quickly learned that you could join several affiliate programs and they would supply you with a free affiliate web page. Unfortunately getting good quality traffic to these affiliate web pages was somewhat of a challenge. And the Major search engines wouldn’t even list my new affiliate web pages. So once again I was left searching the Internet for ideas.

I kept reading over and over again to get your own domain name and create your own web site. Then incorporate all your affiliate links into your new web site. Create a theme and join affiliate programs related to that theme. But I knew nothing about creating a web site. And what the heck is HTML?

I began creating web pages on Microsoft publisher. These were very simple pages and now when I look back at them I have to laugh. They were anything but professional and publisher actually made many errors in the HTML code. But this was all just part of the learning curve. You have to learn to walk before you run.

Eventually I started writing my own HTML using Microsoft word and saving it as a simple HTML text file. To this day all my web page’s are created using word.

Since starting my online business I have probably joined 100s of affiliate program opportunities, re-modeled my web page over 50 times and spend more than 4 hours a day reading and learning how to further promote my sites to make more money. All this was done on my own with little to no training from others.

When I started I knew nothing and now my business is getting between 5-10 commission checks in the mail every month generated from sales or leads coming from my 6 web sites.

I get people that say to me all the time. I cannot do that on my own. Well if I can do it you can too. It just takes a little patients and the will to learn. If you want to make money online you need to act. You need to search for information and read all about how to create your own web site. Then you need to search for information on how to promote, advertise, and most of all how to get good search engine rankings.

5. Take a step back for a moment and look at the market. Can you compete with the other companies out there? There is always a way but if you’re looking to become the next Wal-Mart, there is no way you’ll make it. Instead, try to be the best soap making company or whatever you’ve set your goals to.

6. Study others in the business opportunity you are looking at and ask them how much money they make at it. Ask them how business seems to go. Don’t ask one person, ask two or three or as many as you can get your hands on.

7. Ask people before you sign up for a business opportunity about the business and the products. If people have had a bad experience all around with this company, why would you want to join it?

8. Make sure that when you do get involved with a business opportunity that you don’t just sign up and do nothing with it. You must work to make the money you want with that business opportunity.

9. Take in a consultant to help you with your first steps. It may be an added expense but it will sure help you along the way.

10. Take care to do what it is you want to do. Don’t get swallowed up in all the hype. If you won’t buy it, don’t sign up for it. Take a day or two to think about a business opportunity you just heard about before taking the next step.

All in all, trust your gut instincts. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Then you know it's not easy. Some say that only 2-3 out of 10 affiliate Adwords campaigns will actually make a profit.
